As China slows, US factories fret

An emerging renaissance in American manufacturing is staring at the oncoming threat of a global economic slowdown.

After investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in high tech equipment last year, Drew Greenblatt?s manufacturing business is beginning to see a return on that investment. Business was up 20 percent in 2011 at Marlin Steel, which makes wire baskets for industrial customers.

Exports are helping a lot. Greenblatt?s company just shipped to China a $20,000 order?made at his Baltimore, Md., factory with steel supplied by a mill in Illinois.

Low wages and low-cost manufacturing used to make Chinese markets tough?for U.S. manufacturers to break into. Today, rising wages in China are giving American companies?second thoughts about moving their manufacturing jobs to China,?Greenblatt said.

?All of a sudden, if your math says, ?I?ve got to pay the guy $7.50 an hour in Shanghai or I can hire a guy for $12 a hour in Canton, Ohio,? why would I do it in Shanghai?? said Greenblatt. ?I?ve got intellectual property issues over there, there?s no rule of law, there?s a lot of corruption. ?Plus if I make it here, I get the stuff six weeks faster: there?s no freight. So a lot of the reasons to push jobs overseas are starting to fall apart.?

Other companies are doing the same math. A report in March by the Boston Consulting Group found seven industry groups,?selling about $200 billion in Chinese-made imports, that will likely shift production back to the U.S. to duck rising costs in China. That could add between $20 billion to $55 billion to U.S. gross domestic product before the end of the decade, the authors estimated.

U.S. export gains in Chinese and other global markets will create between two million and three million?American jobs, lower the U.S. unemployment rate by between 1.5?to 2.0 percentage points?and cut the U.S. merchandise trade deficit by 25 to 35 percent, according to the study.

Demand for Chinese exports, meanwhile, is being hurt by the ongoing recession in Europe, China?s largest trading partner. The hit to China?s exports so far has been relatively mild compared to the sharp downturn that followed the financial panic of 2008, according to Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics. Lost exports amount to about $300 billion - about half the losses from the 2008 downturn ? and the Chinese economy is better able to weather the loss because its large and its currency is stronger than in 2008, he said. But he figures the drop in exports hasn?t run its course and could get a lot worse.

The slowdown in China is also starting to take a bite out of the economies of smaller, emerging economies and trading partners that supply the raw materials needed to feed China?s export machine.

?Asia should be very worried if the European situation continues to unravel," said?Rob Subbaraman, chief Asia economist, at Nomura Group. ??It can handle moderate growth in Europe or the U.S. But if we start to move toward a deep recession there?s a tipping point where Asia gets hit very hard again.?

To be sure, China?s economy is still growing at a pace that would feel like wild prosperity in larger developed economies like the U.S. or Europe. But as the last major engine of growth, some forecasters are cautioning that the loss of Chinese demand threatens to spark a wider global slowdown that will crimp demand for U.S.-made products.

U.S. manufacturers are ?about to face a negative shock from the hit to exports from the deepening European downturn and the spreading impact on demand in other key trading partners in Asia,? said David Rosenberg, chief economist at Gluskin Sheff.

One big unknown is whether Chinese consumers will pick up the slack from the lost growth in exports. China continues to pursue an ambitious, 30-year plan to transform itself from a rural agrarian society to an urbanized manufacturing and consumer-driven economy. The ongoing flood of workers from farms to factories -- the largest peace-time migration in human history -- will continue to drive demand for new housing, cars and other consumer products.

But in the short-run, consumer spending isn?t kicking in fast enough. Retail sales, adjusted for inflation, are slowing. As the government continues to invest heavily in public products and state-owned businesses, consumer spending makes up a smaller portion of the economy than it did five years ago. More than 50 percent of the Chinese economy still relies on some form of government spending: consumers account for roughly a third of GDP ? about half the level in the U.S.

To revive growth, China?s leaders are expected to continue heavy government investment. After years of trade surpluses with the rest of the world, the government has plenty of cash to invest. But the risk now is that the government is creating a massive infrastructure and real estate bubble.

?They have been overbuilding everything to create jobs for these rural migrants,? said Harry Dent, an author and economic forecaster. ?They have 20 to 30 percent more capacity built in their main industries ?- cement, aluminum, steel, on and on. They just build stuff to create jobs? and to keep people happy. And they?ve been doing this for over a decade.?

China?s central bankers also face a difficult choice in trying to stimulate growth. The usual path of lowering interest rates could add heat to a real estate market that has already reached bubble levels in many urban areas. China?s bankers are also coping with a pile of bad loans to failing state-owned companies after an earlier round of easy credit aimed at heading off the 2008 recession.

That means easier credit may not produce the economic stimulus China?s leaders are hoping for.

?The positive, long-run outlook doesn?t give firms an incentive to invest today if China largely has all the apartments and car production lines it needs for the next couple of years,? said Mark Williams, chief Asia economist at Capital Economics.

It remains to be seen how badly U.S. manufacturers would be hurt by a wider, deeper coordinated global slowdown. Once recessions spread around the world, they become more difficult to reverse.

Greenblatt is upbeat. He sees an opportunity in export markets as competitors pull back. He also thinks the U.S. is somewhat insulated from a trade shock. Only about 10 percent of U.S. GDP comes from exports compared to the economies of China or Germany, where nearly a third of total output relies on exports.

Discussing whether China's economy could be on the brink of collapse, with Gordon Chang, Forbes columnist, and Peter Navarro, UC-Irvine business professor.

?Most American factories don?t even consider exporting -- it doesn?t even cross their mind,? he said. ?Because it?s easier sell to Denver and Duluth than it is to Denmark.?

But Dent argues that the wider cause of the global economic slowdown -- a historic shift in demographics -- will continue to weigh on global growth for another decade or so no matter how hard governments try to spur more growth.

Most developed countries are seeing their Baby Boom population peak, which slows consumer spending and adds to the cost of government-funded social programs. ?That means global growth won?t revive to historic levels for another decade, until the next generation of Millennials reaches its own peak spending years, said Dent.

?Were all slowing down,? he said. ?And China does not have good demographics going forward. They only have this export machine and urbanization and they?ve overdone both.?

Your Wedding Will Be Magical With These Tips

Are you interested in having a wedding during the summer or winter? Do you want roses or irises or another type of flower? There are a lot of decisions that have to be made for this special day. Regardless of whether you are getting married, or you are planning a wedding, the article below provides some tips for assisting you in having a very memorable occasion.

If the cost of extravagant floral arrangements is too high, one cost effective alternative that you should consider is potted plants. You can obtain potted plants in various sizes and place them throughout the ceremony area and reception. You can choose pots with colorful glazes or add a little pizzazz to plain terracotta pots with decoupage, ribbons, or creative paint applications. The plants can be used as wedding favors for the guests to take home, or the bride and groom can use them to landscape their own yard.

A great gift for your guests at a destination wedding is a basket that you have delivered to their room full of vacation goodies. Include items that will be useful, like a tourist map, disposable camera, sunglasses, a hat, and pamphlets from fun places to visit in the area. You could also toss in a few suggestions for local eateries and cafes.

Every aspect of a wedding should be planned in minute detail. You wedding day should be special to those in attendance.

If you plan to wear a gown to your reception, make sure to practice dancing in a full skirt until you perfect the moves. You might be used to walking around or dancing in your skirt, but it will feel different to your future husband. You might feel better about dancing in a very fancy dress.

Share an online itinerary with your guests, especially the out-of-town ones, so that everyone can plan their schedules in advance. Let people know what events, like the rehearsal etc., that they need to show up for, so they end up in the right place at the right time.

Craigslist is a good outlet for locating local talent for your wedding. Make sure to meet them in person, with your groom for safety, before you give them any money.

Instead of using expensive, elaborate flower arrangements, opt for various inexpensive potted plants. You can choose pots with colorful glazes or add a little pizzazz to plain terracotta pots with decoupage, ribbons, or creative paint applications. The guest's wedding favor can be the plants in the pots, or you can put them in your garden.

If you are looking to dazzle your guests but cannot afford a hit to the wallet, consider renting diamond jewelry. This gives you that look you want but won't cost you a ton so that you can stay within your budget.

An ordained friend or relative can officiate your wedding. They can get ordained easily online. Doing so allows for individual customization of your personal ceremony, and it can also save you having to spend money on an officiant. Make sure to use caution by asking the local officials, to make sure doing this isn't against the law where you are.

Once you have formulated how your wedding will be designed, write it down and begin looking for the appropriate services. Once you start seeing what service providers will work with your design, you can begin to sort things out by price and type of services offered.

If you're wearing a tuxedo at your wedding, take the time to get one that fits well. Get the opinions of others before you decide on the tuxedo of your choice. Keep in mind that photographs will be taken during your wedding, so you should look your best, in the way that you would want to be remembered.

When you are looking for a wedding dress, think about what styles will suit you. Avoid getting hung up on a particular style before you know how well that style fits your body. Short people should look for petite-sized dresses. Your dress won't look right if you get a regular-length dress and have it altered. You will be much happier with your choice.

Dress shopping for a wedding is fun, but make sure that you select one that does look great on you, not one that only looks good on the rack. A dress that flatters you should be the focus of your shopping. If you are short, stay away from altering normal length dresses and opt for the petite section. The petite dress will look better; you will be really glad you made the decision!

If you are going to have kids in your ceremony, dress them in clothing that is comfortable. By utilizing softer fabrics, the children in your ceremony will look great while feeling quite comfortable. If the children are going to be wearing new shoes, make sure they are comfortable, and let them walk around in them a bit so that they can get broken in. Paying attention to your children's comfort can help them behave appropriately during the wedding. Uncomfortable children will be focused on fixing their discomfort and may fidget or engage in other distracting behavior. If your children are comfortable, however, they'll be excited about participating in the wedding and behave appropriately.

Your plans for a wedding outside should always include a solid backup plan, in case it rains, or other unforeseen problems occur. Look into renting a couple of tents, or find a location that has a community hall in addition to an outdoor space. Set up planks to prevent your guests from getting mud or dirt on their shoes.

Employ a good friend or relative, as long as they can haul your equipment and gear through the evening. They can also be of assistance in rounding everyone up for the group photographs, and this will make sure no one is left out.

Choose group activities to fill your special day with fun. Don't just let everyone stand around tapping their feet, waiting for something to happen. You can have competitions and games, or maybe a karaoke hour. It can be an unforgettable wedding if everyone is able to interact with one another and have some fun.

Embellish your bouquet with sparkle. You can use rhinestones, diamonds or Swarovski crystals. Doing this isn't difficult. It works with adhesive crystals, costume jewelry, and expensive antique jewelry. To make sure it goes with your ensemble, remain consistent with the cut, size and colors of the sparkles.

As you already know, there are only a few things that a wedding must have. You can then add the non essentials that are important to you and your betrothed. These things can be a nice addition, but they also add unnecessary stress that takes focus away from happiness this day entails. That is why the ideas and information in this article are geared towards how to have a happy and memorable wedding day and not one that fits into some textbook standard.

Also, if you lack expertise in finance but are hungry to learn, do what one our college bound members did: send us in finance words and phrases not so easily understood and we will decode them!? Have your name plastered all over the place, and learn, not a bad combo.

Below is an excerpt from one our members and wealth management go-to Carleton English.

?We know the adage that 90% of investment returns are a product of asset allocation but what does that mean?? Many people assume asset allocation and diversification are one in the same when in fact diversification is a possible method of asset allocation.? In a previous post, I discussed how to determine your risk tolerance. ?Asset allocation is building a portfolio that matches your risk tolerance with your desired return.?

?Looking to buy a house in a year? ?Your asset allocation may be in cash instruments with relatively low risk and similarly low return to preserve your capital. ?You are employing an allocation strategy that meets your goals despite it not being diversified. ?Do you have a longer time horizon with less defined goals? ?This is when a more diversified portfolio may be part of your strategy. ?Diversifying in loosely correlated asset classes may help over the long haul when one market sector takes a dive. Whatever allocation you choose, it is important to review your portfolio regular to make sure it is still in line with your risk tolerance and goals.?

-Carleton English

Insider phrase #1: ?Asset Allocation?

Decoded: You have X amount of money burning a hole in your pocket to invest.? That cash is an asset, and you want to allocate it to other different assets that make you money (examples being gold, stocks, bonds).? Allocate enough of that cash into many pieces of different assets, and you will what is called by finance peeps as ?diversified portfolio.?

Insider phrase #2: ?Risk tolerance and return relationship?

Decoded: Have aspirations of earning 100% on your investment in some fly by night mining company?? Rest assured that while the payoff could be huge, you must have a willingness to lose it all to net that 100%.? This is known as having a ?high risk tolerance.?

Insider Phrase #3: ?Cash Instruments?

Decoded: Sure do wish a saxophone could be blown and out comes cold, hard cash.? Alas, no go.? A cash instrument is a CD or government bill that is like owning cash because it could be sold quickly to raise some cash.

Insider Phrase #4: ?Loosely Correlated Asset Classes?

Decoded: Owning a home is an asset.? Owning a stock in an oil company is an asset.? If oil prices go up it will unlikely cause the value of your home to drop that day, hence these two assets are loosely correlated.

Michigan wildfire in grows to more than 21,000 acres

Michigan Department of Natural Resources via AP

A wildfire in Michigan's Upper Peninsula grew by 17 percent to more than 21,000 acres, May 26, as officials warned of tough conditions and welcomed help from water-dumping aircraft from the Michigan National Guard.

Wind gusts were predicted at 15 m.p.h. and high temperatures were in the 60s in a dry, remote part of the state where access has been tricky because there are few roads. Tahquamenon Falls State Park, a popular destination for campers seven miles from the fire, was closed.

The fire, known as the Duck Lake Fire, was 20% contained in Luce County, about 75 miles northeast of the Mackinac Bridge, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said. The fire was described as long and narrow, stretching 11 miles north to Lake Superior.

98% Jiro Dreams of Sushi

All Critics (63) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (62) | Rotten (1)

By the time this graceful film is over you understand why Japan has declared the bald, bespectacled Jiro a national treasure. Even if you've never tasted sushi, the man's singleness of purpose will inspire you.

Gelb apparently understood that his subject was itself so taking that he wouldn't need filmic embellishments to keep his viewers alert.

Obsessive, we were saying? Oh my, yes, and that's what makes the film so compelling.

The most interesting moments, however, belong not to the chef but to those who labor in his shadow.

As exhausting as Jiro may be, he's also inspiring.

Would you be willing to massage an octopus for 45 minutes, until its flesh possesses just the right amount of chewability? Jiro is.

The movie functions well as high-end food porn, but it's also an insightful character study of the single-minded Jiro.

It's an interesting exploration of a particular aspect of Japanese culture, which is fathers and sons working together. It's a very likeable film, and sometimes, that's enough. If you're a Japanophile or a sushi nut, you'll likely be in heaven.

Even after you've eaten your fill, Gelb's film is memorable not just as a foodie paradise, but as a lovely, insightful portrait of a man in a lifelong search for perfection.

Watching Jiro work with the decades of experience on his side is like watching a master painter adding strokes to a masterpiece.

I can imagine that if you are a sushi lover, then you'll be drooling over the delicious looking scenery, and it maybe even convince you to make a trip to Japan just to try some of the food.

The film similarly guides us smoothly from opening credits to closing without complaint or concern, and before you know it, you've dreamily submitted to 80 minutes of raw fish preparation.

If you ever wondered what is the Art of Sushi, David Gelb's intriguing portrait opens up a whole new world, in which we learn about simplicity, balance and what defines 'deliciousness'

The centerpiece is a gorgeously photographed sequence showing a dinner at Jiro's restaurant, a "concerto" of the many courses (all sushi, no appetizers) that will make any foodie's mouth water.

Thoughtful, gentle and wonderfully restrained, David Gelb's brief documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a portrait of an artist in full flower, a master who has achieved a species of perfection.

Since few (if any) of us will ever be able to actually taste sushi chef Jiro Ono's cuisine -- minimum cost per person to dine there is roughly $300 -- we'll have to console ourselves with the visual bliss of this entertaining documentary.

As artful as it is appetizing.

The parade of dishes is like one note after another in a symphony meant to be appreciated by all the senses.

Yes, it will make you hungry, but it also supplies an understanding of skill and care that's largely lost in today's mechanical world. It's a simple story, yet one with fascinating levels of behavior and expertise to examine.

As simple and elegant as Jiro's preparations, "Sushi" alternates between the master musing on his cooking philosophy (good food, he says, makes him feel "victorious") and footage of the three chefs at work in their minuscule kitchen.

You don't have to like sushi to appreciate a master

This documentary strikes a balance between storytelling and food porn that's hard to come by in foodie flicks. Like a proper sushi meal, "Jiro" left me feeling sated, not stuffed.

Savory documentary, which is especially appetizing for foodies.

iPhone-Powered gTar Teaches You How to Play the Guitar [VIDEO]

?If you?ve ever picked up a guitar for the first time and tried to play a favorite song, you know how discouraging it can be. The gTar completely changes that,? says Drew Houston, Dropbox founder and CEO.

The gTar is an iPhone-powered guitar that boasts itself as ?the first guitar anyone can play.?

Designed by the California-based Incident Technologies, the guitar includes an app and a piece of hardware to connect to your guitar. Once you dock your iPhone on the hardware and load the app, integrated LEDs on the fretboard will illuminate ? thereby allowing you to follow and learn how to play the guitar.

Unlike a standard guitar, the gTar doesn?t use pickups to amplify the strings. Rather, sensors detect the strings as you play them in real-time and send them back to your iPhone. The phone then produces the actual sound.

The free app comes with a collection of songs from which you can choose to play. As you attempt to follow along with it, a feature called SmartPlay will mute out incorrect notes and ?nudges you along to play the sound correctly.?

GTar comes with three different levels ? easy, medium and hard. The easy level is designed for the user to only play the strings on the guitar; the medium level graduates the player into playing both the strings and the frets at the same time. SmartPlay will mute the incorrect notes on both of these levels, but once you get to the hard level, all of your notes ? good and bad ? will ring out.

The gTar also has a ?Free Play,? option, which allows you to choose from guitar models, keyboards, synths and drums to add more music to your playing. Since all the sound is produced on the phone itself, you can also manually tweak the sounds to create effects like a chorus or echo.

With 30 days to go on its Kickstarter campaign, the gTar has already reached its $100,000 fundraising goal ? in fact, it?s more than doubled that amount. It?s expected to sell in retail for ?over $449.?

Would you be interested in learning to play the guitar on a gTar? Tell us in the comments.

Arcade Heroes ? 1up's ?What if Video Games Never Came home?

Newsfeed 1205 via The Stinger Report

1up.com is doing a ?What if? series of articles and videos that covers their idea of what life would be like if some sort of situation in the game industry were different. They decided to look at if arcades were the only thing that existed and I can?t help but think it?s all tongue-in-cheek since it certainly doesn?t take a serious look at what it would be like. Not that I haven?t thought up some ?what if? scenarios in my head before about video games when I have some down time and nothing better to think about. Here?s the video if you are interested:

For some serious thought on it and not lamenting how it would suck to be a game journalist that has to *gasp* get out to play a game to review it (aka #1stworldproblems), I think it would be a lot like what you find in countries around the world where home consoles aren?t easily accessible due to cost. I have lived in Brazil for a few years and there a console like the Xbox 360 costs somewhere around R$2500-R$3000. I knew a lot of people that made about R$500-R$700 a month so such an expense as a game console is out of the question for many. As such arcades are fairly popular there as it is a much cheaper way for a consumer to enjoy their games. I imagine that it is also similar in China, where a lot of new arcade development is taking place and there isn?t a console in every home. There are inherent problems that come out of there, particularly with piracy but there are some who are trying to make their own unique games to appeal to players.

Spending quarters or the equivalent on arcade games is much easier to come by in a lot of places and that?s also not taking into consideration the other costs of a game console. Anytime I see arguments that arcades are too expensive, I haven?t seen comparisons of how much people spend on home entertainment as you have the cost of the console, accessories like the controllers, the games themselves at $30-$60 a pop, and the DLC for those games. Add in the cost of a new TV if needed for an HD game console or a surround sound system if desired; maybe even the cost of your internet service or Xbox Live subscription.? That?s the thing that gets overlooked with arcades ? when you have a cabinet, it has everything the game needs built into it already ? the HD screen, the sound systems, the unique controllers and the game. Considering the effects of inflation, even paying a $1 for a game is not so bad when you look at it as a total package and we have to remember that markets only support what people are willing to pay for as well.? That?s even more striking when a game uses some sort of expensive new technology like an autostereoscopic 3D screen like with?Let?s Go Island 3D, a large multi-touch screen like TouchFX or ReRave has or a seamless multi-screen like with Dariusburst Another Chronicle. You are probably not going to fork over several grand to get that sort of stuff at home for a small selection of games.?? Of course with no home games, what would be out there would be different, to fit into the arcade model. But who knows, with all the development dollars being spent there, some variations of the model would certainly appear and the market would adjust to please the players.

Speaking of costs, how much do you really spend on an arcade game to beat it? I?ve spent about $15 before to clear out a newer game but as I get better at it I spend less for the same amount of entertainment afterwards. Anything I spend time on watching first that prepares me for what is to come as well. And if I don?t like a game, spending $1 to find that out (although usually more like 75?) is much better than spending $60 for the same thing. Of course there are rentals for homes but I have been burned before on buying into the hype for a game only to really not like it afterwards. Again, that is a lesson for rentals but when you look at the arcade industry, it?s a rental model as it is. I should also add that arcades don?t have ridiculous DRM that requires an always on internet connection for you to play single player. That is what modern PC DRM is turning into, pricey rentals that are a bit more than what arcades will charge.

I?m not against home development by any means, I own over a dozen consoles myself and I play both home and arcade games frequently. There?s no reason you can?t enjoy both but if all you did was arcade gaming it?s not like it would be a dreary world of soulessness either.? It?s not like the world of home gaming is a sea of roses either. Recent earnings reports from Japanese companies show Sega and Namco doing better in arcade amusements then home amusements. Sega cut back on their home developments quite a bit, Atari is facing continued pressure and rumors of cuts Sony is facing a potential disaster over the Vita which is not selling very well in Japan. A lot of development is moving to mobile platforms of course and costs for games will change as more shifts to the digital domain.

Inside Prevention: In memory of Wanna Wright, breast cancer ...

Wanna WrightWanna Wright, J.D.
December 11, 1944 ? May 20, 2012

Wanna Wright was the heart and soul of our work at the Breast Cancer Fund for nearly two decades, serving on our board of directors with great distinction. We started calling Wanna our Poet Laureate in 1999 when she wrote ?Alive /to Testify,? a powerful poem that expresses her deep concern for the health disparities faced by the low-income communities and communities of color that she was part of and worked on behalf of every day. "I's got to reach out to keep 'em alive, din you can teach 'em to testify?'bout de air an de waters dat's killin us daughtus," she wrote.

A breast cancer survivor and tireless advocate, Wanna volunteered her time, knowledge and heartfelt concern to speak out about the unconscionable rates of breast cancer incidence and mortality, especially among African-American women. She advocated for early detection, treatment and equitable access to care, and she helped shape the Breast Cancer Fund?s environmental health mission to prevent breast cancer before it starts. In 2001, to recognize her impressive contributions to breast cancer prevention, the Breast Cancer Fund honored Wanna with the Bella Abzug Advocacy Heroes Award.

With her purple hat and warm smile, and with her husband Charles at her side, she reminded us why we do this work, and we will not forget her. Wanna Wright, we dedicate our work to you with love and gratitude.

Krista Dittmeyer Murder: Anthony Papile To Plead Guilty In Maine Mom's Death

Police say Krista Dittmeyer was a 20-year-old drug dealing mom who was lured to her death by three men out to steal her stash.

Now, 13 months after her death, one of those men has agreed to plead to charges in her killing.

On April 22, 2011, Dittmeyer's car was found running in the parking lot of a New Hampshire ski resort with her 14-month-old daughter, Aliyah, in the back seat. The Maine woman's body was recovered three days later from a pond about a quarter of a mile from the car, the Associated Press reported.

"She's very lovable, very outgoing," Dittmeyer's mother, LaNell Shackley, told NBC's "Today" show before her daughter's body was recoverd.

"I've asked all of her friends, and they tell me the same thing," Shackley said. "They don't know who would want to do something to hurt her."

Unbeknownst to Shackley, though, there were people who wanted something from her daughter, police are now saying.

Dittmeyer was living with her boyfriend, Aliyah's father, when he was arrested for cocaine trafficking in 2010, and he was still behind bars at the time of her death. It appears Dittmeyer had turned to similar work in his absence, in a move that ultimately led to her death.

Much like Mary Louise Parker's character Nancy Botwin on "Weeds," the young mother had turned to the world of drugs and was killed as part of an attempt to rob her, the Daily Mail reported.

According to the Associated Press, Dittmeyer was allegedly called to a friend's apartment for a drug deal, then ambushed and struck with a rubber club.

Anthony Papile, Michael Petelis and Trevor Ferguson were arraigned in Ossineke, N.H., in connection with the robbery and killing. Papile and Petelis bound her with duct tape and put her in the trunk of her own car, according to the criminal complaint.

Papile allegedly drove Dittmeyer's car to the Cranmore Mountain ski area parking lot and put Dittmeyer in the pond. Ferguson agreed to give Papile a ride to his home from the ski area in exchange for money and drugs.

Papile, 28, of Ossipee, was charged with second-degree murder. Petelis, 28, and Ferguson, 23, of Tamworth, were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

On Wednesday, the New Hampsire attorney general told the Associated Press that Papile would plead guilty in the case, though he did not specify to what charge he would do so.

US Airways flight diverted after security scare

A US Airways flight en route to Paris from North Carolina, landed in Bangor, Maine, after a passenger claimed to have a device implanted in her body. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

By Rebecca Ruiz

US Airways flight 787, en route from Paris to the U.S., was diverted Tuesday afternoon when a passenger began behaving suspiciously.

House Homeland Security Committee chairman Peter King (R-N.Y.) told NBC News' Luke Russert that the female passenger was a French citizen from Cameroon who had not checked bags on the flight.

The passenger reportedly passed a note to a flight attendant saying she had an explosive device surgically implanted in her. Passengers then held the passenger down and two doctors summoned by the pilot checked her for scars.

Officials say they're now satisfied that the passenger did not present a threat. The Transportation Security Administration said in a statement that it was "aware of reports of a passenger who exhibited suspicious behavior during flight" and that the passenger was being interviewed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, according to the Associated Press.

The FBI and Homeland Security Department warned airlines last summer that terrorists are considering surgically hiding bombs inside humans to evade airport security.

The airline, in a statement, said the flight's Boeing 767 aircraft was carrying 179 passengers and nine crew members that landed without incident around noon U.S. Eastern time, according to the Associated Press.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said it had scrambled two F-15 fighter jets in response to the incident but gave no further details.

With the passenger in custody of law enforcement, the Boeing 767 was cleared several hours later to continue to its final destination in Charlotte, N.C.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

TV remote control inventor dies

The inventor of the television remote control has died at the age of 96, his former employer has said.

Zenith Electronics said Eugene Polley passed away of natural causes on Sunday at a Chicago hospital.

His 1955 invention, Flash-Matic, pointed a beam of light at photo cells on each corner of the TV, turning it off and on and changing the channels.

His invention was a luxury add-on in the days before hundreds of cable television channels.

Born in Chicago in 1915, Polley began his engineering career in 1935. He worked at Zenith for 47 years, earning 18 US patents.

He was a long-time resident of Lombard, Illinois, outside Chicago.

Because the Flash-Matic used light to operate the television, it was temperamental and other lights could interfere with its operation.

It was followed by sonic-controlled remotes and then infrared and radio frequency models.

Before Polley's invention, Zenith's first remote was connected to the television by a wire cord.

Polley was proud of his invention, Zenith spokesman John Taylor told the Associated Press, showing off the Flash-Matic to visitors after his retirement.

"He was a proud owner of a flat-screen TV and modern remote," Mr Taylor added. "He always kept his original remote control with him."

Along with another Zenith engineer, Robert Adler, Polley was honoured in 1997 with an Emmy for his work.

Data Recovery and Your Computer | Reconnect Internet Technology ...

Have you ever wondered if what you know about data recovery is accurate? Consider the following paragraphs and compare what you know to the latest info on data recovery.

Sooner or later your company could become the victim of a natural disaster, or something much more common like a lightning storm or downed power lines.

Just because your company may be a small business doesn?t mean it?s immune to data disasters. If a small business does not have a good and tested disaster recovery plan in place when disaster hits they may never fully recuperate and it may even cause them to go out of business. Sometimes even a data recovery service is unable to be of any help.

Following are some questions that should be answered in order to give you some idea of what you need to do to that will help you if you do have a data disaster situation.

Do you know where your company?s most important data files are located?

Are these files being backed up and by what means?

How often do you run these data backups and are they verified and tested?

Do you have automated controls that correctly and on a consistent basis do the backups?

Do your data backup tapes go off-site and how often?

Do you have some kind of security against tampering or theft of your data backups?

Do you keep your servers, routers, hubs, and phone system controllers in locked areas to keep them more secure?

Does just anyone have access to your servers and your other technology assets or do you limit access to at least two, but no more than four people?

Do you run a locally securable operating system, such as Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4,on the company?s desktop PCs and notebooks?

Do you have any confidential data stored locally on any desktop PCs or notebooks? Are any of these systems running an inherently in-secure operating system, such as Microsoft Windows 9x or Microsoft Windows Me?

Do you prevent unauthorized boot-ups or tampering with BIOS configuration settings by using power-on passwords?

On your desktop PCs and notebooks, how are main updates, service packs and releases kept current?

The bottom line is that you can?t plan when a data disaster may strike but taking a few steps beforehand may help with your company?s survival in the days and weeks following a disaster.

NATO summit: The Taliban's view

The Taliban issued a statement ahead of today's NATO summit in Chicago, expressing frustration with the coalition's moves to 'prolong the occupation.'?

By Ben Arnoldy,?Staff Writer / May 20, 2012

Hours before the start of a major NATO summit in Chicago, the Taliban's main spokesman released a lengthy statement signaling the insurgency was open to a political solution to the conflict but accused NATO of "wavering in their stance" on negotiations.

"The Islamic Emirate has left all military and political doors open,"?read the statement, written in English and attributed to spokesman?Zabihullah Mujahid. "[H]owever the invaders are utilizing a one step forward, two steps backwards tactic. They are conjuring artificial excuses to prolong the occupation of Afghanistan, are wavering in their stance and do not seem to have a clear strategy for a political solution."

Until NATO stops wavering, the statement continues, the Taliban considers the coalition's calls for talks to be "meaningless."

It was the Taliban who suspended negotiations in March following the burning of the Quran on a US base and a shooting spree by a US soldier.?But the US and NATO have continued to talk of seeking a negotiated settlement to the 11 year conflict.

Most recently, President Obama backed negotiating on a visit earlier this month to Afghanistan. However, he also outlined a new strategic pact with the US-backed government in Kabul that would let some American soldiers stay in Afghanistan past 2014 until 2024.?

Obama's two-pronged message of peace talks but prolonged troop presence unsettled what appeared to be a Taliban strategy of running out the clock?on the US withdrawal target of 2014. The Taliban's statement today suggests the insurgency is irked by the move to "prolong the occupation."

Whether Obama's gambit pushes the Taliban to publicly return to negotiations remains to be seen. While today's statement signaled openness again to negotiations, it also expressed doubts about NATO's sincerity in wanting to leave.?

"The foreigners should forgo prolonging and complicating the Afghan issue for their colonialist objectives," the statement reads.

It goes on to remind NATO that, despite the 2024 extension, there are domestic pressures to wrap up the war soon. The statement cites a recent?CBS News/New York Times poll in which 69 percent of respondents?said the US shouldn't be involved in Afghanistan. Indeed, Monitor polling on the new US-Afghanistan strategic pact found nearly two-thirds of?Americans reject the broad outlines of the deal.?

The Taliban statement also reiterated the group's stance that they were not involved in the 9/11 attacks and will not allow Afghan soil to be used to launch attacks on other countries.?

"The Islamic Emirate once again declares that it holds no agenda of harming anyone nor will it let anyone harm other countries from the soil of Afghanistan hence there is no reason for the occupying countries including America to continue the occupation of Afghanistan under the pretext of safeguarding its own security," the statement reads.?

NATO helped overthrow the Taliban government in 2001 after the regime failed to hand over Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in the days following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.?
