Bethel College professor drowns during Michigan fishing trip

Bethel College is mourning the loss of a professor.

Dr. Eugene Carpenter, 69, jumped into Michigan's Kirk Lake to retrieve a boat that had drifted into the lake during a fishing trip Monday. He susbsequently drowned.

Carpenter was a professor of Old Testament and a Scholar-in-Residence. He had been with the university for 26 years.

A visitation will be held July 6 from 5-8 p.m. in the Everest/Rohrer Auditorium on Bethel's campus. The funeral will be held July 7 at 11 a.m. in the same location. Friends are invited to visit on hour prior to the funeral.
